Heaven, Hell and Purgatory

how we spend our life today determines how we spend eternity

There is much confusion as to why we are alive and how our choices during this life determine our eternity. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory are greatly different than most understand, but regardless of how well we know what our eternity will be like, we will all die and spend it in either Heaven or Hell.

In this article, I will explain what the saints and the Word teach us about Heaven, Hell and Purgatory and how we can obtain Heaven, avoid Hell and help those in Purgatory too.

What is the Meaning of Life?

If we don’t believe in God, we live very unsure as to what is the whole purpose of our existence. Philosophers have been baffled over this question for all time.

But for those who believe in God the answer to “what is the meaning of life” is quite simple: we are alive to spend our time on earth coming to know, love and serve God for the salvation of our souls (ours and others). Everything we do should be done for us to obtain our goal: Eternal happiness loving God in Heaven is the whole reason for our existence.

“The human person is created to praise, reverence, and serve God Our Lord, and by doing so, to save his or her soul.”

–St. Ignatius of Loyola

Literally, everything we do is supposed to be for this purpose. This desire innately lives within all of us, even though for most it is greatly suppressed by our desire for sin (the opposite of our reason for living), as I explain.

Why Did God Create Us?

Therefore, if we are to spend our time knowing, loving and serving God, then why did God create us in the first place to do such a thing?

God designed and planed all creation as an act of love.

What Happens to Us After We Die?

“The only way to obtain such a favour [help for souls in purgatory] is Divine love; neither prayers nor any other labours will avail [help their suffering] without this [love], and it must be [done with] such a love as you [St. Gertrude] now have for Me” (Jesus to St. Gertrude the Great).
